I'm a hisec carebear, in the sense of "carebear" that is, "I don't intentionally seek PvP encounters, but I'm not going to cry to mother when PvP happens to me."
I've been playing since 2008. This character was created in December 2007, but I finished the trial period and left the game alone for 30 or so days while I was finishing up some stuff in that naked-elves-dancing-on-mailboxes game (from memory, finishing the druid epic flight form quest line, having an affair with the other raid healer, and quitting the game). Then I spent far too long trying to run L3 & 4 missions in a Merlin.
That's probably oversharing a little.

If I self-identify as gay because I feel happy and joyful, the fact that someone quoted me out of context will be little comfort when I'm in hospital recovering from being mugged by some homophobes who thought I was gay.
Thus we'll have a whole bunch of people identify as "care bear" in this thread, where they interpret carebear to mean "risk averse", "doesn't like nullsec", "wants PvP removed from hisec", or "prefers to handle conflict by expressing love for everyone."
What does care bear mean? If it doesn't have an accepted meaning, what's the use of identifying as such?

There is a difference between "survey" and "psychoanalysis". One in intended to achieve some kind of understanding of a population, the other is intended to achieve some kind of understanding of the self. There may not be any wrong answers in either, but in a survey it's no use identifying 80% of the population as "carebears" if everyone defines that term differently.
Without external rules and guidance, words can have no meaning to communicate. This is why we have dictionaries.
